Because people fish in so many different ways and most have a favorite way to fish, picking just two baits from the hundreds is difficult.
This is not an article for "experts" or people set in their ways. It's for the guys and gals who just like to fish and sure would like to go out sometime and catch a whole bunch of fish.
The best time to do that is during the fall, especially here on Barkley and Kentucky lakes, as well as on most other lakes on this general latitude.
Spring is when most people who don't fish every weekend think about wetting a line. Being cooped up for most of the winter has a lot to do with that. And spring is a great time to fish because bass and other game species are moving shallow where they become more vulnerable to the average fisherman.
During the fall, however, game fish again move shallow, but for a very different and important reason: During the spring, their primary motive is to spawn. During the fall, all they're thinking about is putting on their winter fat.
All those little fish they spent so much time making and guarding during the spring are nothing more than delicious, bite-sized morsels during the fall, and the truth is, they don't care who made them.
These bait fish of various species, but mostly shad around here, travel around in tightly-packed pods that can number in the thousands. There is some safety in numbers, but this natural instinct also makes it much easier for bigger fish to find and attack them.
Because the food these little fellers eat is found on or near the surface, these massive groups of synchronized swimmers are silhouetted against a clear sky like a flashing neon sign that says "eat here."
There is no more predictable pattern at any time of year. I'd be hard pressed to pick just two baits that I would call best for the spring, but during the fall I can do so with great confidence. These baits not only are the best, they are designed to be fished in a way that anyone can master in a few minutes, regardless their experience.
One is a Rat-L-Trap. You can fish just about any size and color of this lipless bait, and the other similar baits by other manufacturers, and catch some fish, but by far, the best size is a one-quarter-ounce with chrome sides and a blue back.
And you can fish it a few different ways, but by far, the best way is to bring it back about as fast as you can. They are wind resistant and very easy to cast long distances on either baitcasting or spinning equipment, using 10- or 12-pound test line.
The other is a Mepps or Rooster Tail in-line spinner, again in one-quarter ounce. Choose the whiter or lighter colors. Sometimes, when it is overcast, those with a gold blade work better, but bass and other game fish bust minnow pods most frequently when it is clear, so in-line spinners with a chrome blade are best.
In contrast, in-line spinners are best fished slowly, just fast enough to make the blade rotate, and the best equipment to cast them is a spinning outfit with 10-pound-test line. It, too, is very easy to cast long distances and all you have to do is bring them back slowly and steadily. If you bring them back slowly, they won't twist the line, either, so you don't need a swivel and all those extra knots that could break. Just tie them directly to the line.
You may have noticed that you can fish both baits quite well on a spinning outfit with 10-pound-test line, and that's really what I'd recommend, but I'd like to stress that the reel you choose should have a fast retrieve rate of 6-1 or better for the Rat-L-Traps. For this bait, speed kills, and you can always slow down for the in-line spinners, if that is what the fish prefer.
These two baits are so great, because they closely resemble the action, color, flash and size of the young-of-the-year minnows, especially during October and November, when this kind of fishing is at its peak.
With just one rod and two simple baits, you can go out and catch fish all day long by simply moving from pod to pod. These pods not only are highly visible and attractive to gluttonous game fish; it is simple for a fisherman to see which ones are being ravaged because of the splashy surface shows these game fish perform as they tear into them with predatory exuberance.
It may be not only the easiest, but the best fishing of the year.

Few things evoke more fear and panic than does the sight of a rat running across your kitchen floor. People also get about the same reaction when you tell them the noises they have been hearing in their attic are rats chewing on their electrical wiring and air conditioning drain lines.
After the fear subsides people usually get mad, then the questions start.
WHY ARE THEY IN MY HOUSE? This one is easy. They are looking for a place to live. They occasionally come in because it is cold outside but usually it is because they want to live near their food supply. Which is usually a bird feeders (in yours or your neighbor yards) or someone feeding their pets outside.
HOW DO THEY GET IN? This one is a little tougher. A rodent can squeeze through an opening as large as it's head. For a mouse this is a hole about the size of a dime and for a rat it is a hole about the size of a quarter. So, how do you "rodent proof" a building.
* seal around plumbing & air conditioning pipes
* replace torn soffits vents
* install rodent covers over dryer, bath and kitchen wall vents
* screen brick weep holes
* repair holes in soffit and eaves
A successful exclusion service closes up any opening that is a half inch or larger in size.
How do you get rid of them? You have to poison them, kill them with traps or you can catch mice in live traps.
Is there going to be a smell? This question is usually asked with a little panic in the voice and the answer is somewhere between "maybe to probably", if poisons are used. Most baits are anticoagulants and when the rodents start dying they want to go home, and home to them if often in your walls or under your attic insulation.
How do you get the smell out? To eliminate the smell you have to remove the carcass, kill the bacteria causing the smell or mask the odor. If the carcass is visible and accessible remove it. If you can see the carcass but can not get to it, use the Enzymes to kill the odor causing bacteria. If you can't do either of these, you can try masking the smell but, this is a little like using perfume to cover up bad B.O. It helps but you know the stink is still there.
How do you get rid of rats without a smell problem? Use kill traps and/or live catch traps (for mice). A good thing about using traps is they kill and holds the animal for disposal. But, if they are trap shy you have to use baits.
Other than being a little scary can rats hurt people? Yes, directly and indirectly through the fleas and ticks they carry.
Allergy reaction to rodent hair is now recognized as a significant problem in schools. A single pair of rats will shed upwards of 25 million hairs a year.
Lymphocytic Chroniomeningitis Virus is carried in the urine and feces of mice and can cause birth defects in newborn infants.
Hantavirus, a mouse related disease, is frequently lethal and transmitted to people when the feces or urine is inhaled or ingested.
Lyme Disease is transmitted to people and pest from ticks.
In a Denmark study, 100% of mice showed evidence of the infection by Lyme Disease organisms. Lyme Disease was once thought of as a disease found only in the upper regions of the U.S. but has now been shown to be in epidemic numbers in Texas.
Anyway you look at it, rodents are an emotional and dangerous problem. Most commercial accounts and many residential customers have taken pro-active steps to eliminate the problem before they get rats. They get regular inspections, have rodent exclusion done and install bait stations when and where activity is found or suspected.

The Best Single-Shot Firearm to Have in a Survival Situation Is a Shotgun
Many people have the notion that to survive in a remote area they will be catching trout and shooting deer. But the truth is, survival subsistence is a matter of foraging. You eat whatever you can get whenever you can get it. If you don't have a weapon and you don't know how to trap and snare little critters then you must depend on the lower forms of life such as tadpoles, insects, slugs, worms, grubs, etc.
Having a firearm gives you an edge and allows you to reap a bountiful harvest of the most common animals you will encounter - mice, rats, lizards, squirrels, snakes, small birds, porcupines, and the like. Often, deer and other large mammals are either not present or rarely encountered. Therefore, the best firearm to have in such a situation will be one that will take the small and very small game at close to moderate ranges, allow you to shoot the quarry when it is running or climbing, and still has the capability to down a big animal if you are lucky enough to have one come your way.
Only a shotgun can meet those requirements. Shot cartridges fired out of rifle and pistol barrels, even .410 from rifled barrels, produce wide uneven patterns that are of limited usefulness even at very close range. But a true shotgun, even a .410, is quick and effective and will easily take crawling, running, climbing, and flying small game. A shotgun fires a variety of shot sizes, including buckshot and slugs. A shotgun is just the thing for foraging.
Various repeaters and combination guns are often recommended as good candidates for a survival gun. But let's assume that because of cost, weight, and simplicity we have decided on a single-shot shotgun.
If I had to choose a single-shot shotgun for a survival situation it would be a lightened break-down 12 gauge with cylinder bore. The effectiveness of a 12 gauge for game of any size is well established. I would choose a variety of shotgun cartridges that included birdshot, No. 4 buckshot (.24 caliber, 27 pellets), and slugs. I would also add some 12 gauge flare cartridges and some 12 gauge whistling cartridges to use for signaling.
If I had to reduce weight, my reluctant next choice would be for a .410. A 28 gauge would be a better choice than the .410 but 28 gauge buckshot and slugs are almost impossible to find. Regarding a 20 gauge, if I can carry a gun with the size and weight of a 20 gauge then I might as well just take a 12 gauge.
If you plan on putting together a survival kit, here are just a few thing to consider. Make sure you include some wire for snares. You can wrap it around a knife handle or some other item you already have in the kit. Mousetraps and rattraps are also very handy to have. You don't take the whole trap. Instead, remove all the metal parts from the wooden board, discard the board and keep the parts. Then, in the wild, you can reassemble the trap on any piece of wood - log, branch, stump, driftwood, etc. A metal can or cup can be a lifesaver. You can boil water in it, use it to make soup out of little animals, polish the bottom to make a mirror for signaling, collect dripping water or scoop up water from puddles and depressions with it. And a metal can won't take up any space at all if you use it as a container for your survival items.

There are many ways to force mice stay away from your home. However, it is well known that in case you have pets around the house you might want to reconsider using a poisonous repellent. That is why we decided to write a small article that is going to reveal one of the most popular, yet very effective natural ways to avoid mice infestation.
This doesn't mean that controlling mice is easy. Anyway, we recommend you to avoid setting up traps because this is just a waste of time. Mice got adapted and they learned how to stay safe. You need a good plan in order to get rid of them efficiently and we are looking to share some tips with you. In this article we are going to say why getting a cat is safe, cheap, doesn't require a lot of knowledge and experience, and the best of all - it works like charm.
The first, the easiest and yet a natural and extremely effective way to kill mice around your house is simply to get a cat. It is well known that cats got domesticated by early humans in order to help them get rid of rats and mice. Yes this works very well if the cat enjoys hunting and is not lazy. However, most rural cats won't say "No" to a mouse hunt. So you got yourself a new pet that is willing to eat for free and protect your home at the same time. It is a win - win situation.
Is that all, is it that simple? Yes, it is! What kind of experience do you need for keeping such a pet anyway? Get a cat and you are going to stop mice coming in your house or property. It is that easy and even though there are a lot of so called mice pest exterminators that say that cats are lazy and not effective anymore - we consider the opposite. Just get a cat, make it stay around your house and you are going to see results sooner then you expected them.

10 Storage Tips to Keep Bugs, Mice, & Ants Out of Your Unit
A little effort can go a long ways towards protecting your items while they are in storage. Anything worth paying to store is worth protecting it while it's stored. For the safety of your items, those in neighboring units and in consideration of the owner/management of the storage facility, it pays to pay attention to pest control. Here are 10 Storage Tips to Keep Bugs, Mice, & Ants Out of Your Unit.
1. Before moving furniture into storage clean it and vacuum thoroughly. Get all the crumbs, debris and stains off sofas and chairs including down in the cracks and crevices. Any "extras" left in here is a calling card for bugs and once started it affects not only your stuff but that in other units too.
2. Thoroughly clean appliances, large and small, for the same reason. Those crumbs in the toaster tray, the food stuck on small appliances or pans invites in problems you don't want. Clean means nothing to attract bugs or mice and without food and shelter they will not stay.
3. Mothballs work well in boxes of clothing. Be careful though and use cause as they can stain clothes. Putting some in the unit, where they won't stain the contents, is a good idea however. Cedar scented blocks and sachets can be made or purchased to be tucked into boxes of clothing or household goods like towels, blankets and sheets. A good sachet can last three to four months, enough for short term storage.
4. Don't be afraid to use contained insecticides - roach and ant baits can be an inexpensive thing to put in the corners as you don't know what others have stored in their storage sheds.
5. Use mouse and rat baits, or traps with peanut butter instead of cheese. Don't use the traps if you don't check it regularly - leaving one sit in the trap doesn't catch others after the trap is sprung.
6. For additional natural deterrents look to herbs. Catnip is said to repel ants, lavender repels moths, sage repels slugs and mint can be effective against many kinds of pests. Mint and tansy are said to repel mice, although tansy can cause allergic reactions in some people.
7. Stick to canned goods and securely sealed (screw on lids) jars packed to prevent breakage if you absolutely must store food . Because it attracts pests, food is highly discouraged.
8. Buckets from bakeries can be used to store rice or grains. It's strongly suggested this be for a minimal amount of time in a storage unit. There are so many factors that are beyond our control that it pays to use caution. Boxed foods and plastic bags simply offer no resistance to mice and bugs, resulting in an infestation of pests that no one wants.
9. Make sure up around the top there are not holes that birds can get into. Having a bird trapped in a storage unit can be very messy and unpleasant!
10. Avoid storing candles in warm climates and those with liquid like snow globes in cold ones. Some units are not protected from heat and freezing, and not only can the items become damaged but anything under it also. This, in turn, can attract pests due to the oils or dampness. If you must store items like this go for a climate controlled unit, which better protects all of your items.
